Gateway Sculpture for Wellington

The Wellington Sculpture Trust is requesting submissions for a gateway sculpture on the motorway next to Wellington Harbour. The sculpture would replace the previously chosen Hook of Maui which was abandoned for technical and cost reasons.

A $900,000 project budget has been set with half of the funds coming from Council funds for the original project and half from private donors. Concepts and preliminary drawings are required by mid-March 2010.

For a project brief and further details, view the Wellington Sculpture Trust website.

Mapping the Future of the Arts in Wellington

In August / September 2008, arts practitioners met in sessions facilitated by the Council's City Arts team to discuss the future of Wellington's arts. Over 400 artists, producers, educators and organisations outlined a vision for the arts in Wellington, current priorities and possible actions to achieve them. A summary of these sessions is available from the City Arts team.

You can access a forum about Mapping for the Future and ongoing activities through the Big Ideas forum.

Wellington Asia Residency Exchange (WARE)

The Wellington Asia Residency Exchange (WARE) is organised by Wellington City Council and the Asia New Zealand Foundation.

Each year, four artists from Asia will participate in an arts exchange programme in Wellington, and one Wellington artist will take part in a similar programme in Asia.

  • Programme
Visiting Asian artists will stay at the historic Bolton Street Cottage. They will partner with an arts organisation or institution to facilitate their project. This may include workshops, exhibition or performance. Wellington artists will be similarly looked after by their Asian arts partners.
  • Participation
The programme is open to arts practitioners working in any genre.
  • Candidates
Contact the City Arts team if you are a local artist interested in participating, or if you know of any Asian artists who could be interested.
