An artificial reef to make Wellington a top surfing spot
The Lyall Bay Reef Charitable Trust hopes to create an artificial reef to make Wellington a top surfing spot.
The reef is expected to boost good surfing days from 27 to between 118 and 142 each year.
Resource Consent
Resource consent for the reef was granted by the Greater Wellington Regional Council in September 2003. Three appeals against the resource consent were successfully mediated in late 2003.
Reef Construction
The reef would be constructed from sandbags and/or caissons 250 metres offshore from Kingsford Smith Street and would lie 1.3 metres below the surface at low tide in water 4 to 5 metres deep. It is not expected to affect the existing corner break, which is already popular with surfers.
Budget
Wellington City Council has contributed $200,000 towards a feasibility study and the resource consent and design process.
Other funds have been raised by the Trust - including $30,000 that was donated by Wellington International Airport Ltd and $100,000 from the Lottery Grants Board.
The Trust is currently seeking sponsorship to fund the required balance which is estimated to be $2 - $3 million.
