Courtenay Place Park
Courtenay Place Park is a new park on the corner of Courtenay Place and Taranaki Street. The park has enlarged the existing space around the heritage men's toilet block, creating a vibrant new inner-city public space.
Objectives
The project aimed to:
- increase pedestrian space within the Courtenay Place / Taranaki Street cultural and entertainment precinct
- create a safer pedestrian environment, and crossing point on Taranaki Street to remove a black spot in the central city for pedestrian accidents
- increase and improve the quality of public space within the central city.

Park Design
The new park covers the triangular space bounded by Courtenay Place and Taranaki Street through to the St James Theatre.
The project removed the slip lane and parking to create a high-quality pedestrian space.
The main elements of the design are:
- a triangular pedestrian space anchored at the western end by the historic men's toilet, tapering towards the St James Theatre
- a large open paved central area with space for markets, street performances, theatre crowds, festivals and other events
- a clearly identified street edge, with a double row of trees and light boxes displaying rotating graphic art that visually and physically defines the pedestrian zone
- attractive purpose-built bench seating
- stormwater collection to supplement subterranean watering of the trees
- parking spaces relocated around the park, including a new 'off the road' disability carpark.
Public Art - Temporary Art Projects
Budget
The budget for construction of the park was $840,000.
