Central Park Restoration Plan

New bench in Central Park

Wellington City Council completed the restoration of Brooklyn's Central Park in September 2009.

The project began in February 2006 when the Council agreed that some of the proceeds from Plimmer Bequest funds would be used for the restoration.

Plimmer Bequest

The Plimmer Bequest has been held in trust for Wellington residents since 1980, with the proceeds to be used by the Council for beautifying the city’s bays, beaches and reserves.

Restoration Features & Milestones

New toilets in Central Park

• The main park entrance was upgraded with new steps, rock walls, tree plantings, restored lights, granite benches and fresh asphalt.
• New toilets were installed near the playground.
• The main bridge was upgraded with non-slip material, new mesh, and a fresh coat of paint.
• The Renouf Ramp now gives direct access to the playground, the new toilets and the kids mini-BMX track.
• Five curved bridges give access to the top of Moturua Stream, and an upgraded route completes the loop to Ohiro Road.

Vegetation Management

One of the main project goals was improving park sightlines to allow more light in. By pruning and selectively removing existing vegetation, the park now has a more open feel.
