Chimpanzee

Wellington City Council provides funding to the Wellington Zoo Trust to help the Zoo fund its annual operations and maintain and upgrade its exhibits. The Zoo also generates revenue from over 170,000 annual visitors, as well as significant external sponsorship.

Three projects were completed in 2007:

  • the chimpanzees moved into a new indoor house in January 2007
  • the new Wild Theatre opened in September 2007
  • the giraffe house - part of the African Savannah exhibit - opened in December 2007.

Projects for 2008 include:

  • construction of the new Wellington Zoo Conservation Hospital (due to begin in May 2008)
  • design work on an exhibit showcasing sustainable living in New Zealand.

Budget

The Council has approved the following budget for the Zoo for 2007/08:

  • an operating grant of $2,687,500
  • $1,921,000 contribution to capital upgrades
  • $275,950 for general renewals.
