Wellington City Council provides funding to the Wellington Zoo Trust to help the Zoo fund its annual operations and maintain and upgrade its exhibits.

The Zoo also generates revenue from over 180,000 annual visitors, as well as significant external sponsorship to help fund the upgrades.

Projects for 2009/10 include:

  • completing the new Wellington Zoo Conservation Hospital (the Nest)
  • continuing the design work on Meet the Locals (an exhibit showcasing sustainable living in New Zealand)
  • completing the design of the Hub project (the new catering facility in the centre of the Zoo)
  • completing the lions den reconstruction.

The following projects were completed in 2008/09:

  • upgrade of the power supply to future-proof the Zoo
  • refurbishment of The Twilight (nocturnal house)
  • electrification of the giraffe perimeter fence.

Budget

The Council has approved the following budget for the Zoo for 2009/10:

  • an operating grant of $2,709,500
  • $2,574,176 contribution to capital upgrades
  • $234,374 for general renewals.
