Wellington City Council and the Tawa Porirua Stream Walkway Committee (a local community group) are working together on a shared walkway and cycle route. The route follows the rail corridor and provides new footpaths on some of the streets from Willowbank Park to Kenepuru Railway Station.
The shared path will provide a safer cycling route and encourage more people to get about on foot or by bike. The 5 km walkway will link to nearby streets, the shopping centre and other key spots like railway stations, schools, recreational areas and parks.
The Council is committed to working with the local community on this project.
We've finished constructing the 3-metre-wide footpath on Duncan, Findlay, Luckie and McLellan streets and on the section between Redwood and Tawa train stations.
We are currently constructing the path on Beauchamp Street, making our way north to the Findlay Street section.
We're about to begin construction of the pedestrian crossing outside Tawa College. We've agreed on the solution with the Tawa College Board of Trustees and representatives of the Tawa Community Board.
We're planning the east-west link between Hampton Hill School and Tawa College. We intend to seal the grass track between Main Road and Victory Crescent and upgrade the crossing on Main Road to a pedestrian crossing.
KiwiRail have given approval for the pedestrian level crossing between Tawa College and Tawa Pool. We have recently got the resource consent and will soon move into the building consent phase. We expect to construct the level crossing in May 2012, and complete with the work surrounding the project in early 2012.

We are currently accepting and considering any feedback that you may have on this project. If you have feedback, email us at cycling.
The project has been given funding assistance of up to $3.5 million from NZTA as part of the national land transport programme.
The Council has budgeted $1 million annually for the project, giving a completion time of three and a half years.
We divided the shared path into three sections, with Section 1 at the southern end. We've started construction in the middle (Section 2) of the shared path and will work north into Section 3. Section 1 will be the last section to be completed.
