Wellington City Council and the Tawa Porirua Stream Walkway Committee (a local community group) are working together on a walkway and cycle route proposal. The route would follow Porirua Stream from Willowbank Park, Tawa, to Kenepuru Railway Station, Porirua.

The plan is that the walkway would provide a safer cycling route and encourage more people to get about on foot or by bike. The six-kilometre walkway could link to nearby streets, the shopping centre and other key spots like railway stations, schools, recreational areas and parks.

The Council is committed to working with the local community to help make this happen.

Route Analysis & Feasibility Study

An initial route analysis and feasibility study has been completed:

Funding

It could cost up to $4 million to develop this walkway.

Wellington City Council has budgeted $4.75 million over the next 10 years for strategic cycling projects including this initiative, improvements to Middleton Road, and the Great Harbour Way (which is a potential cycling route from Pencarrow to Owhiro Bay).

These cycling projects won’t all be done at once and it is expected the costs will be shared between local councils and the government, with councils potentially paying up to half of the total cost.

Next Steps

Future work includes:

  • looking at cycling and walking initiatives across the city to determine the priority of the Porirua Stream Walkway project
  • more detailed planning and design work
  • talking to potential partners, including Porirua City Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency.
