Wellington City Council and the Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust are jointly developing a reserve management plan for Point Dorset Recreation Reserve.

Overview

Point Dorset Recreation Reserve, located between Seatoun / Worser Bay and Breaker Bay on the Miramar Peninsula, is a prominent, undeveloped, steep hillside at the entrance to Wellington Harbour.

The reserve is owned by the Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust.

Proposal

The draft reserve management plan identifies:

  • the long-term vision for the reserve
  • the natural and cultural features of the reserve and how these will be protected
  • recreational activities on the reserve
  • actions needed to carry out the plan.

Next Steps

Consultation on the draft plan closed on 15 August 2011.

The final plan was approved by the Council in October 2011.

April 2012 Update

We are making progress with some of the proposed work identified in the plan:

  • Contractor confirmed for the walkway upgrades (work will start in the next quarter).
  • Vegetation cleared from tracks and around the military structures.
  • Pa site design, interpretation, and entrance upgrades planned (work will start in the next quarter).

  • Ecological restoration (targeted weed control, Places for Penguins grant).

Arbor Day (5 June 2012) events will be held on the site and local schools and the community will be invited to join in.
