Newtown Park running track
Wellington City Council is spending $3.6 million to modernise facilities at Newtown Park to meet current and future needs for the athletics and soccer sports codes, and the wider community.
Work started in 2006 and most parts of the project have been completed. These include redevelopment of the grandstand, relocation of a changing room and toilet pavilion to the upper field, construction of a new equipment storage building, public toilets and an extension to the grandstand.
Background
The grandstand (built in 1972) was unable to provide the standard of facilities required to host sporting competitions.
Some major events were lost to Wellington because of the poor state of the grandstand facility and its associated services – such as drug testing rooms, rooms for officials, and a lack of meeting room space, disability access, changing rooms, and toilets.
Following public notification, resource consent was granted in May 2006.
Redevelopment Plan
Significant features of the redevelopment plan include:
- refurbishing the areas under the existing grandstand (completed)
- extending the grandstand (single storey only) to provide larger changing rooms, and a larger function and administration area (completed)
- increasing the number of carparks (underway - due for completion December 2008)
- native planting / revegetation (completed)
- installing public toilets at the northern end of the grandstand (completed)
- improving access for people with disabilities (completed)
- redevelopment of the upper field (completed).
Project Timeframe
Redevelopment works started in mid-September 2006, and completion is expected by the end of 2008.
