Reservoirs that need replacing

Capacity Infrastructure Services is working on behalf of Wellington City Council to replace the two water reservoirs on Messines Road, Karori.

The current Messines Road reservoirs are located between the Russian Embassy complex and numbers 61 and 63 Messines Road, Karori. These reservoirs were built in 1925 and 1935 and need to be replaced for economic and structural reasons.

The current reservoirs are an essential part of the water supply for the Messines Road area. They service 9,000 people and supply six other reservoirs in Karori that serve another 4,000 residents.

Aims

The aims of this project are to:

  • provide a secure water supply
  • provide reservoirs that are earthquake safe
  • make sure there's an adequate water supply for the next 75 years (almost double the existing capacity).

The finished reservoirs will be buried, covered with topsoil and grass, and the whole site will look more attractive than it does now.

Time Frame & Process

This is a major project that is expected to take two and a half years. The work began in early November 2010 and is expected to be completed by April 2013.

The reservoirs will be taken out of operation one at a time - there will always be one fully operational reservoir. We hope to be able to complete the work without significantly disrupting the water supply.

Update

The structural work of the second tank was completed in April 2012. The tank is now being filled and a drop test will be completed in the first week of May. The project is expected to be completed ahead of schedule.

Traffic & Noise

From time to time, a stretch of about 150m of Messines Road near the work site will be reduced to one lane. Traffic management will be in place to minimise disruption.

The hours of work will be Monday to Saturday, 7.30am to 6.00pm, although quiet setting-up work can begin from 6.30am. There will be no work on Sundays or public holidays.

The accessway between Ponsonby Road and Messines Road is closed until November 2012.

The site may be noisy at times, especially during demolition phases. As there's a lot of material to be moved, trucks will be coming and going.

Conserving Water

During the project, Karori residents will need to conserve water where possible to make sure that there's an adequate water supply. This will be especially important during the summer when water demand peaks.
