Karori Wildlife Sanctuary
As well as saving native wildlife, the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary aims to become a major national and international eco-tourism attraction.
To achieve this, the Sanctuary Trust wants to build a ‘gateway’ that includes a visitor and education centre, shop, restaurant/cafe, and conservation displays. Also planned are upgrades to tracks and trails and more car parks.
Funding
Prime Minister Helen Clark presents the Government's $6.5 million grant
The Council approved an $8 million interest-free loan to the Sanctuary for the Visitor and Education Centre in 2006. The loan is to be paid back over 25 years.
In June 2007, the Government's Significant Community-Based Projects Fund granted the Trust $6.5 million. This will also go towards the Sanctuary's Visitor and Education Centre.
