Newlands Town Centre - McMillan Court Upgrade

Newlands shopping centre will undergo a major upgrade with the redevelopment of McMillan Court car park and public space.

Further development of the area is happening with Foodstuffs (NZ) building a new supermarket next to the car park area on the corner of Bracken and Newlands roads.

These changes will combine to help make McMillan Court a district centre that is both vibrant and attractive for this growing community.

Goals of the Upgrade

• An improved car park, including good vehicle access and parking space to support the centre's businesses and activities
• A more pedestrian-friendly area with safe, accessible walking connections and public spaces for meeting people, socialising, sitting and spending time
• A stronger focus point for the shopping centre and a better sense of place
• Better connections between McMillan Court and other parts of the centre, including the Community Centre

Work Involved

Work in and around the McMillan Court car park includes:

• regrading the surface
• reconfiguring the overall layout
• landscaping
• laying new paving
• installing lighting and seating
• building new public toilets.

Work involved in the public space and pedestrian mall area in and around the glass canopy includes:

• constructing new planter edges and benching
• landscaping
• installing new lights
• re-laying surfaces
• removing the old canopy beside the playground.

Time Frame

We're finalising the design and construction details of the new car park and public spaces and are expecting to start construction in mid 2012.

Construction of the New World supermarket started in June 2011 and will continue through to September/October 2012.

Minimising Disruption

There will be disruption to the area as the construction works for the supermarket, car park and mall upgrades get underway. However, we will work to make sure that the works are coordinated and staged to minimise this disruption.

Background

The Council's Northern Growth Management Framework identified the need to redevelop and improve Newlands town centre as part of managing the future growth and development of the northern suburbs.

Following on from the framework, the Council set about developing a long-term plan to revitalise the Newlands centre shopping and community area.

After consulting with local businesses and the community, the Council developed and adopted the Newlands Centre Plan in April 2010.
