Wellington City Council is working to improve sporting facilities by creating artificial sportsfield surfaces.
As well as the sportsfields listed below, the 2012-22 Draft Long-Term Plan proposes the construction of three more artificial sportsfield surfaces in the next five years:
Wellington City Council, with support from the New Zealand Community Trust, completed construction of an artificial sportsfield surface on the upper field at Nairnville Park, Khandallah in April 2009.
The upper field at Nairnville Park had poor drainage and often couldn't be used for sport.
The artificial sportsfield is used for football (soccer), rugby, cricket and various other sports. The field is available for casual use by the community when there are no bookings.
The playing field is 85 metres by 49 metres and has floodlighting.
Wellington City Council constructed Te Whaea artificial sportsfield on what was the upper car park at Te Whaea National Dance and Drama Centre (former Wellington Showgrounds), next to Rugby League Park.
Work started on the project in December 2009 and was completed in July 2010.
The artificial sportsfield is used for training and competition games by football (soccer) and rugby union teams, and other sports codes.
The field is 65 metres by 120 metres and has floodlighting.
Two artificial sportsfields were completed at Wakefield Park, Island Bay, in July 2011.
Both fields are full-size and IRB / FIFA certified (that is, they meet the requirements of the International Rugby Board and the International Federation of Association Football).
Funding from the New Zealand Community Trust, the NZ Lottery Grants Board, the Wellington Community Trust, Capital Football, Island Bay United AFC, and Wellington Rugby Football Union enabled two artificial sportsfields to be developed at the Wakefield Park. The Council brought forward funding from 2012/13 to contribute to the project. The total cost of the project was $3.3 million.
In April 2011, the Council approved a grant of $660,000 for construction of an artificial sportsfield at Wellington College during the 2011/12 financial year.
The sportsfield was officially opened on 29 March 2012.
In February 2012 the Council agreed to pay half the cost of a new turf at St Patrick's College in Kilbirnie.
The proposed new all-weather sportsfield is a partnership project between the Council and St Patrick's, with the Council paying 50 percent of the total cost up to a maximum of $800,000.
The sportsfield is expected to be constructed during the 2012/13 summer.
