Description of Application:

Wellington City Council has received notice of a requirement for a designation from the Ministry of Education. This is for establishing a primary school and early childhood education centre on a site of 4.6 hectares at 48 Amesbury Drive, Churton Park.

The proposed designation provides for:

  • A primary school opening in 2012 catering for approximately 200 Year 1 - 6 children rising to about 400 by 2021.
  • An early childhood education and care service for up to 50 children from babies to 5 years old.
  • A staff complement of approximately 37 for the two facilities.
  • Proposed buildings being located generally to the rear of the site (Mauldeth Terrace end) below the existing embankment.
  • Primary access located off Amesbury Drive with secondary access from Romaine Road. Car parking and a drop-off collection facility would be located on the site between these access points.
  • It is proposed that the designation be subject to a range of conditions including:
    • The need for an outline plan to be submitted prior to construction detailing the bulk and location of buildings, access, parking, landscaping, fencing, signage and external lighting.
    • The development of a travel plan providing specifically for measures to reduce vehicle dependence.
    • Noise mitigation measures.
    • The preparation of a construction management plan.
