Council’s Annual Report Takes Top Prize Again

Wellington City Council’s Annual Report has won the Supreme Award at the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants’ Annual Report Awards for the second year in a row.

The Council is the first organisation to win the Supreme Award twice since it was introduced in 2003. It won the award against strong competition from some of New Zealand's top companies, corporations and Crown entities. The Council's 2005/06 Annual Report also won the Local Government category and received a commendation for its governance reporting in the Crown and Local Authority section.

The awards recognise excellence in financial reporting to stakeholders.

In receiving the award, special recognition was given to the Annual Report's technical excellence and for the effective way that the Council communicated "its story" to the community.

The Council's Chief Executive, Garry Poole, says the achievement represents a fantastic effort by the Council officers involved. "This success is the result of the hard work and dedication of Council officers. It shows that we set the benchmark for reporting standards for all sectors across New Zealand."

The judges said the Council's report was clearly written with the target audience in mind, which distinguished it from a lot of other annual reports. They said the report had an attractive format with substantial content and anyone with an interest in a particular area of the Council's operations could zoom in to the relevant part of the report and get a complete picture.

The judges also said the Council had maintained its integrity by being transparent on issues it has faced or will face in the future and the report's governance statement took the standard to another level as it addressed real governance issues.
