Waitangi Park will come alive on Tuesday 6 February with a multi-cultural celebration to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Starting at 10.00am, the Capital's annual free Waitangi Day celebration begins with a blessing ceremony followed by musical performances from Congolese musician Sam Manzanza, The Wellington Pipe Band and Batucada, a community based percussion group who specialise in the Samba.

At midday, the Wellington Tenths Trust, supported by the Waka Uru kapa haka cultural performing group, will conduct a powhiri to formally welcome the public on behalf of the Council and the Tangata Whenua. This will be followed by traditional kapa haka performances by Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Nga Mokopuna and Ngawari Hauora, Wellington East Girls College and Rongotai College.

The remainder of the afternoon continues with contemporary Maori and Irish music by Toni Huata and Toku Reo, and the Shenanigans, the African Rhythm Band and salsa music from Grupo Salson and dance by Salsa Bomba. The celebration finishes with a 60 minute set from Soul Cake, a seven-piece covers group.

Council Arts and Culture Portfolio Leader Councillor Ray Ahipene-Mercer encourages Wellingtonians from all cultures to celebrate the occasion by attending the event. "It's a great all-inclusive event for anyone who enjoys being in a relaxing environment and listening to good music with a peaceful message from a wide range of performers representing Wellington's diverse ethnic groups. People should arrive early to enjoy the festive atmosphere.  There will be market stalls and lots of room for dancing and picnicking."

Also on Waitangi Day and celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, is the Radio Active 89 Fm One Love - Jammin' Concert at the Hataitai Velodrome between 12 noon and 7.00pm.

The concert is a tribute to the legendary Bob Marley's birthday and Waitangi Day and will see an exciting line-up of the best live dub, roots and reggae music, including Olmecha Supreme, Adi Dick and Home Fire Burning with DJ support from Ra Twig, Topknot and Carlito. Admission is $5, under 14 free. There is a strict no glass policy and no BYO.
