Following several months of negotiations, Wellington City Council has secured a site for the Newlands Community Centre at 15 Batchelor Street.

The site was bought because it is an ideal space for the centre, car-parking facilities and an outdoor half-court.

The city's Northern Growth Management Framework identified in 2003 that the Newlands area required more community resources. As a result, the Council agreed to build a flexible, multi-purpose facility to encourage community's development.

The Council's Social Portfolio Leader, Councillor Stephanie Cook says the Newlands community has worked hard to get this far and she is thrilled that the site has finally been bought.

"The construction of the centre is likely to begin in June 2007, and will hopefully be complete within the year. I look forward to seeing the Newlands community enjoy a facility that they have campaigned long and hard for."

Wellington City Council allocated $1.848 million to the project and secured a further $500,000 from the Johnsonville Licensing (Charitable) Trust (JLCT).

Council designers worked with the Newlands Community Reference Group to come up with the ideal concept for the facility. It will include a toy library, cyber library, meeting rooms, performance space, an outdoor half-court and facilities for young people. The designers also planned ahead to ensure the centre can be modified in future for any unanticipated technological trends or other needs that the community may require.
