Wellington Hosts 2006 Sister Cities NZ Conference
18.04.06
Wellington will host the Sister Cities New Zealand 25th Anniversary Conference from 9-12 May at the Michael Fowler Centre.
This conference marks the 25th anniversary of the Sister Cities New Zealand organisation and the first Sister City relationship formed in New Zealand between Hastings and Guilin, China.
A highlight of the conference will be the formal signing of a new Sister City relationship between Wellington and Beijing. The agreement will be signed by Mayor Kerry Prendergast and the Deputy Mayor of Beijing Mr Sun Anmin.
Mayor Prendergast says Wellington is honoured to host this important conference which also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the worldwide sister cities movement.
"We have received a fantastic response from both national and international VIP delegates. This conference offers an exciting array of presentations, interactive workshops and outstanding social and networking opportunities. Participants will not be disappointed."
Delegates from the USA, Australia, Japan, Korea and China will also be joining New Zealand mayors, councillors and local government officials for a series of wide-ranging presentations – many of which will be chaired by Wellington Deputy Mayor Alick Shaw.
Mayor Prendergast says the delegates will not be expected to spend all their time hard at work.
"There will be an informal karaoke evening with Wellington's very own world class entertainer Frankie Stevens as MC.
"We pride ourselves on being the cultural capital and delegates will find an intriguing selection of theatre productions, live music and exhibitions within walking distance of their hotels. Then there are our finest restaurants, cafes and bars for a little relaxation, and a dazzling array of shops from designer boutiques to department stores for those needing a little memento of their trip."
