Wellington City Council has funding available for environmental and strategic projects that will benefit the city.

The Council's Environmental grants support a wide variety of community projects.  Previous projects funded range from a free booklet on Wellington's indigenous plants to workshops on growing your own food in the city.  Environmental grants have also helped volunteer groups to plant large numbers of trees in far-flung parts of the city.  $50,000 is currently available for Environmental grants - this will increase to $80,000 for the next financial year starting June 2006.  People interested in applying for an Environmental grant can discuss their proposal with either Jim Ebenoh or Myfanway Hill at the Council on (04) 499 4444.

Strategic grants support major initiatives for the city with $165,000 available for projects that fit the criteria.  Last year, Council Strategic grants assisted an audience development project and a feasibility study for a deep water sports pool.

Grants Committee chair Councillor Hayley Wain says Strategic grants can be used to investigate and research possible projects.  "A number of feasibility studies have been supported by Council Strategic grants in recent years.  This is a way of exploring possibilities for the city, and in the next few years some exciting new initiatives may emerge.  The Grants Committee is always open to considering new ideas, particularly those that are well thought-out with a clear plan.  As with all of our grants we take into account community desire for the project and the ability of the group to deliver results."

The closing date for both Environmental and Strategic grants is Tuesday 28 February 2006.
