The Terrace Tunnel will be closed to all traffic from 6.00am until 11.00pm on Sunday 29 January so contractors can carry out drainage and surfacing work on narrow sections of road on both sides of the tunnel.

Traffic will be diverted on to The Terrace, but road users are advised to use the quays along the waterfront as an alternative route in and out of the city.

The work, associated with the Inner City Bypass, involves a stormwater drainage upgrade and resurfacing. It is being carried out for Transit by contractors Fulton Hogan.

Project Services Manager Greg Rangi says the work cannot be done using a simple lane closure because of safety concerns over the location of the upgrade and the narrow sections of road involved.

He says drainage work will be carried out in the northbound lane outside the tunnel and the high-friction road surface will be renewed at the northern end of the tunnel.

Mr Rangi is confident the work will be completed within the given time – "We have given ourselves a bit of float", he says.
