The eagerly awaited re-opening of the Freyberg Pool & Fitness Centre on Oriental Bay is scheduled for Tuesday 24 January after a makeover of the facilities.

To celebrate the reopening and thank people for their patience, entry for swimming will be free on Tuesday.

Freyberg Pool & Fitness Centre is 42 years old, and as part of the scheduled maintenance plan, the pools, spas and saunas have been closed to the public for the past eight weeks.

The summer months were chosen as the best time to complete the maintenance as it is when the facility is quietest.  This is mainly due to customers using either the Thorndon or Khandallah outdoor swimming pools, enjoying the sun and sea, or being out of town during the holiday season.

The maintenance work included retiling the entire pool, rebuilding the sauna, spa and steam room, retiling and redecorating the foyer, painting work, re-designing pipework underneath the pool and making over the changing rooms.

The facility re-opens at 6am on Tuesday 24 January for business as usual.  Anyone who visits on that day will get a chance to pop in for a free swim!

"We know closing the facility is an inconvenience and we felt the best way to thank people was to let them come in for a free swim," says City Council Recreation Wellington Manager, Jamie Delich.

The Freyberg Pool & Fitness Centre is open 7 days a week from 6am until 9pm, apart from Christmas day.  Activities include lane swimming, aquajogging, fitness classes, massage, spas, steamroom and gym facilities overlooking the Wellington harbour.

Parking in the attached car park for facility users is free.
