Meridian Energy Summer City Swings into Action
05.01.06
Three weeks of free concerts and magical storytelling sessions kick off at the Botanic Garden this weekend as part of the Meridian Energy Summer City Festival organised by Wellington City Council.
The ASB Gardens Magic concerts will showcase Wellington's wealth of musical talent in 22 evenings of rip-roaring fun and groovy sounds at the Sound Shell from this Sunday 8 January. Concerts start at 8.00pm each night and finish about 9.30pm and once again the garden areas adjacent to the Sound Shell will feature magical lighting from dusk until 10.30pm.
City Council Summer City Producer Jessica Garland says the band line-up this year has a fresh, exciting and very Wellington feel.
"The season is a platform to bring top local musicians and their original music to Wellingtonians, as well as an opportunity to highlight excellent up-and-coming bands," she says.
This year's line-up features a new generation of musicians set to make a big impact on the national music scene including Hollie Smith, Age Prior, Module, Ghostplane, Pearl, Sequoya, The Aviators and The Eggs.
The season also has some well-known names in jazz and classical circles with Roger Fox, Zamba Flam and Geoff Culverwell all making an appearance. The acclaimed Wellington Vector Orchestra will get funky with their string ensemble backed with drums.
The evening of swing music with much-loved De Ja Blue on Thursday 12 January will be preceded by a free swing dance lesson given by Studio Red at The Dell from 6.00pm to 7.00pm. The season will have a hot finale with 10-piece salsa band Candela performing the final concert on Sunday 29 January.
Also keeping the family entertained at the Botanic Garden is Enchanted Tales – children's storytelling twice daily at 11.00am and 1.00pm at the Dell from this Saturday 7 January to Saturday 28 January. Fairy Trina won children's hearts last summer and this year she promises to keep sprinkling the fairy dust around with a host of new story ideas and new actors.
"Each story-telling session is different as it depends so much on the interaction and imagination of the kids,' says Katrina Baylis (aka Fairy Trina). "People can bring their kids or grandchildren more than once – in fact every day to enjoy new stories!"
