Wellington City has appointed Victoria University tutor Douglas Mews as the new City Organist.

Mayor Kerry Prendergast says the City is delighted with Mr Mews' appointment which will bring a new dimension to music and entertainment in the Wellington Town Hall.

"The timing of Mr Mews' appointment couldn't be better.  On 6 March next year we will be celebrating the centenary of the City Organ, the jewel in the Town Hall's crown.  It will be fantastic to once again have a City Organist."

Mr Mews has a Masters degree in organ performance and has given recitals in New Zealand, Australia, Holland and Germany.  He frequently performs with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.  The City Organist position is for 100 hours a year.

Mr Mews says he is really pleased with the appointment.

"The Town Hall organ is remarkable in that it is a large Edwardian instrument that was built to entertain Wellingtonians with arrangements of orchestral favourites as well as original organ music.  I'm so looking forward to playing the William Tell overture, along with Bach and Liszt," he says.

Mr Mews' first job as City Organist will be to develop a programme for the year.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for Wellington," Mayor Prendergast says.

"It's likely there will be free lunchtime recitals and a host of events for Wellingtonians to enjoy.  Mr Mews will also be working with the universities, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and other organisations that organise events in the city to gain maximum exposure to organ music.  It is also likely the appointment of a City Organist will lead to Wellington Town Hall becoming part of the international touring organist circuit," Mayor Prendergast says.
