Wellington has an excellent public transport network of buses and suburban trains. Many people who live in the ring of inner suburbs in Wellington city often prefer to walk to work each day – getting around the inner city is easy because it is so compact.
According to the 2001 census, 16% of people in Wellington walk or cycle to work. Another 16% of people travel to work by public transport.
The network of public transport operators is managed by Metlink, which contracts different providers in different areas. A full list of timetables and fares regarding buses, trains and ferries can be found on its website or by phoning the Metlink Service Centre 0800 801 700.
