Traffic on Jervois Quay

If you need a car when you first arrive in Wellington, you may want to hire one.

Most rental car companies require drivers to be a minimum of 21 years, and may also impose other conditions. For example, you may be required to have had a full licence for at least two years. Sometimes there is also a surcharge for people aged 21 to 24.

Most rental car companies accept an overseas driving licence or an international driving permit, but you must show the actual licence to the agent.

Importing

It is possible to import cars into New Zealand but there are laws that govern this. All cars entering New Zealand must meet the standards stipulated by Land Transport New Zealand, and you should check its website for more information. There are customs implications too.

New Zealand Customs charges a tax on the value of an imported vehicle, as well as duty on some vehicles such as motor homes. All new imported vehicles are also charged GST. A list of shipping agencies which sail into Wellington harbour can be found on Centreport Wellington’s website.
