- Double Tax
Many people are tax residents in two countries and, as a result, may be taxed twice. Because of this, New Zealand has double tax agreements with a number of countries in order to determine who has the first or sole right to tax the person's income. The IRD website has the list of countries that have a double tax agreement with New Zealand.
- Social Security
New Zealand also has social security agreements with a number of other countries. This means that people from those countries are entitled to apply for the agreed benefits in New Zealand (usually including superannuation payments). The Work and Income website has a list of those countries, as well as links to more detailed information about the nature of the agreements.
Tax Exemption
People arriving to live in New Zealand may qualify for a temporary tax exemption on most of their foreign income. This temporary exemption is available to new migrants or returning New Zealanders who have not been resident for tax purposes in New Zealand for at least 10 years prior to their arrival in New Zealand. The exemption is only available once in a lifetime.
