If you wish to locate slightly further afield, the Wairarapa is an increasingly popular destination. Over the steep Rimutaka hills, the flat plains of the Wairarapa have a distinctly slower-paced, country feeling.
Many people commute regularly to the city by train or car. Still more Wellingtonians have weekend lifestyle properties there, and divide their lives between town and country.
The main attraction for many is the international quality wines that are grown in the Wairarapa, particularly around Martinborough and Gladstone.
Martinborough and Greytown have developed into busy weekend destinations. Both offer high quality boutique accommodation, great cafes, restaurants and galleries, and high street shopping.
