Interpretation deals with spoken communication. Wellington City Council provides a free interpretation service for Council issues such as library matters, rates and city housing. This service is available when people contact the Council by telephone, or when they present their query face to face. Council staff will identify the need for an interpreter and arrange the interpreting service, which includes sign language.

Other interpretative services in Wellington include:

  • Wellington Community Interpreting Services -
    Phone:  (04) 384 2265
  • Telephone Interpreting Service (TELIS) -
    Phone:  (04) 384 2849.

In addition to the above, you can use Languageline. It was established by the Office of Ethnic Affairs and is the only free national interpretive service in New Zealand. Callers with questions about a certain issue can receive interpretative help on the phone if the service they require is registered as part of Languageline.

Translation Services

Translation deals with written documents. The Department of Internal Affairs also provides a professional translation service for individuals, education providers, business, central and local government. There are private translation services also available.

ESOL Tuition

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is a term used for programmes that teach English to people from non-English speaking backgrounds. English is one of two official languages used in public and in the business world in New Zealand, the other being Maori. Migrants wanting to improve their English language can access one of a number of ESOL courses available in Wellington city. See the Tertiary Education Commission website for more information.
