Central Wellington

Central City apartments

Central Wellington consists of Te Aro, Aro Valley, Lambton, Mt Cook, Mt Victoria, Oriental Bay, Roseneath and Thorndon. These neighbourhoods are within walking distance of the business district. Modern apartments and townhouses can be found alongside renovated cottages and villas, some dating back to Wellington’s colonial days. Mt Victoria, Roseneath and Oriental Bay are highly sought after for their proximity to the city centre, all day sun and harbour views.

Northern Suburbs

Wellington’s northern suburbs include Broadmeadows, Chartwell, Churton Park, Crofton Downs, Grenada, Johnsonville, Khandallah, Newlands, Ngaio, Paparangi and Tawa. Housing is affordable and there are excellent amenities including shopping malls, schools and recreation facilities. The northern suburbs are linked to the city by rail and a motorway.

Southern Suburbs

Adelaide Road - Newtown

Brooklyn, Berhampore, Owhiro Bay, Island Bay, Kingston, Kowhai Park, Melrose, Mornington, Newtown, Southgate and Vogeltown are located to the south of Wellington city. This area is on Wellington’s rugged south coast which is a popular area for outdoor recreation.

Eastern Suburbs

Swimming beach at Scorching Bay

Hataitai, Kilbirnie, Lyall Bay, Maupuia, Miramar, Rongotai, Seatoun and Strathmore make up the eastern suburbs, made famous by being home to film director Peter Jackson and the world class digital effects facility of WETA. There are shopping centres in Miramar and Kilbirnie and the area has a very popular swimming beach at Scorching Bay and a surf beach at Lyall Bay.

Western Suburbs

These include Karori, Highbury, Makara, Northland, Wadestown, Kelburn and Wilton. Kelburn is home to the main campus of Victoria University and the Botanic Garden. Karori, Wellington’s largest suburb, is where you will find stately colonial villas as well as modern executive residences. It also has the region’s only dedicated mountain bike park. The family-friendly suburb has two shopping villages, three schools and numerous parks and playgrounds. Only 10 minutes from Karori is Makara, a semi-rural area with a golf course and a rugged coastline.
