New Zealand has a minimum youth wage. All employees aged 16 years or more must be paid the statutory minimum wage. There are slightly different minimum pay rates for those aged 16-17 years, and those 18 years or over. Youth who are younger than 16 years have to negotiate their rate of pay with their employer.

The Department of Labour’s Employment Relations Service has more information for youth workers and also for businesses hiring youth workers.

Children of Migrants

Everyone in New Zealand must have a permit of some kind. The children of people who are working or studying in New Zealand must also have a permit, which allows them to engage in any level of work. These options should be discussed with the New Zealand Immigration Service.

In some cases, it may be worthwhile for people to seek a ‘variation of condition’. An example of this is where a child on a student visa seeks a variation of condition to allow him or her to work part-time while studying.
