Wellington has employment opportunities for migrants in a wide range of industries. In fact, regional businesses cite lack of skilled labour as the greatest constraint on their growth.

In a recent survey of 291 Wellington businesses, 42 percent said they had delayed investment because of a lack of skilled workers. Nearly 60 percent said their firm’s ability to expand was being affected as a result.

Skilled workers in demand include health professionals, secondary school teachers (especially in maths and science), early childhood teachers, IT professionals, engineers and trades-people of all types. Also in demand are accountants and finance professionals, policy analysts, and local government personnel.

Regional EDA

The Regional Economic Development Agency (Regional EDA) is a publicly-funded agency that assists businesses seeking to establish and develop in the Wellington region. It is in constant contact with Wellington employers and recruiters and seeks interest from skilled migrants through its jobs database.

Migrants looking for work in the Wellington region can register on Regional EDA's jobs database, which is specifically for jobs in the Wellington region. Employers and recruitment agencies use this database when searching for candidates for positions in priority categories.

Regional EDA's migrant attraction programme helps to smooth the way for migrants and expatriates to settle in Wellington by providing information and advice.

Wellies

An active network of IT migrants operates in Wellington. This group, known as the Wellies, provides advice and support for people contemplating a move to Wellington or those already here.
