Adult and community education programmes play a vital role in providing access to learning for people throughout their lives.

A diverse range of courses, held at night or on weekends, is offered in Wellington city by Victoria University, Wellington High School, Newlands College and Onslow College.

Adult and community continuing education courses are also offered in Porirua, Kapiti, and Hutt Valley.

ESOL for Adults

ESOL is a generic term used for programmes that teach English to speakers of other languages. Adults wanting to improve their English language can access a range of ESOL courses. The Tertiary Education Commission provides information on these courses.

  • Adult education courses
ESOL education for adults ranges from beginners to advanced courses in business English. Courses are available at most polytechnics and universities. ESOL Assessment and Access Service can provide specialist advice on ESOL providers that best suit the needs of the learners.
  • English Language Partners
English Language Partners is a national network of trained and qualified home tutors who provide one-to-one English instruction to refugees and migrants. The volunteer tutors visit homes and provide individual instruction to adults unable to attend formal language classes. The tutors also plan social get-togethers where participants can practise their conversational English and build social networks. There are three offices in the Wellington area.
  • MCLaSS
MCLaSS stands for Multicultural Learning and Support Services and is located in the Multicultural Services Centre. MCLaSS conducts classes in English for speakers of other languages, but it does not have a tutoring service. MCLaSS also provides a job mentoring service for new migrants.
