A new migrant can come to New Zealand and establish a business in the following ways:

  • a long-term business visa
  • the investor category
  • the entrepreneur category
  • residency and an open work permit through being a partner or spouse to a New Zealand citizen or resident.

Once a residency visa has been granted, then you have the same opportunity to start and run a business as a New Zealand citizen.

Business Migration Branch

The Business Migration Branch of the New Zealand Immigration Service is responsible for reviewing the applications and business proposals of people applying for a long-term business visa. Staff members are made up of business specialists and they are equipped to determine whether or not an application warrants acceptance.

Travel Visas

For some categories of business activity, business people can enter New Zealand on a travel visa. An example is someone entering New Zealand to take part in business negotiation or consultation. Another example is someone representing a recognised trade agency. People can find more information about this possibility by contacting Immigration New Zealand.
