The result of the poll is binding on the Council.
The local body elections in Wellington city in 2010 were held using the STV electoral system and the legislation requires the Council to use this system for the 2013 elections.
Wellington's local body elections will continue to use the STV electoral system beyond the 2013 elections until either the Council passes a resolution or a further poll of electors determines otherwise.
