ePetitions allow people to petition the Wellington City Council, via the internet, on matters relevant to the Council's business.
When an ePetition closes it is presented to a Council committee or subcommittee meeting in the same way a traditional paper petition is presented.
Benefits
ePetitions are more convenient and wider-reaching than paper-based petitions. They are available to a larger audience and are easy to sign.
Another benefit of ePetitions is that petitioners are able to provide links to background information to support their case.
Creating an ePetition
Anyone is able to create an ePetition about any issue the Wellington City Council is responsible for.
To create an ePetition you are required to provide detailed contact information. If your ePetition is accepted, only your name, suburb, city and email address will be published online. Full contact details will be included in the version of the petition that is presented to the appropriate Council or committee meeting.
Once you have completed the ePetition submission form, your petition will be verified and checked by Council staff. You will also be sent an email to verify that your request to set up an ePetition is valid. If your petition is approved it will be placed online where it will be open for signatures.
If your ePetition request is declined, the reason for its refusal will be posted online.
Promoting your ePetition
As a creator of an ePetition you will be responsible for raising awareness about it. This involves encouraging others to add their name to the ePetition. If this is not done, your ePetition may not receive any signatures. Council staff do not promote any individual petitions.
Signing an ePetition
To sign a current ePetition you are required to provide detailed contact information. Your name, suburb and city are the only details that will appear online. Your full details will be included in the version of the petition that is presented to the appropriate Council or committee meeting.
You will be sent an email to verify that your electronic signature is valid before it is added to the petition.
Closed ePetitions
Once a petition is closed no further signatures can be added. The ePetition will be verified and presented to the appropriate meeting either by, or on behalf of, the principal petitioner. The status of the ePetition will be published on the website.
