Wellington is 'sister city' to Beijing. Wellington's Mayor will attend the Beijing Olympics in August 2008.
We respectfully ask her to raise human rights violations in Tibet and to strongly urge authorities in Beijing:
*To respect the human rights of Tibetans and to free those held for peacefully expressing their beliefs
*To allow UN monitors and journalists access to Tibet to ascertain the situation
*To negotiate with the Dalai Lama for a meaningful solution to the Tibetan issue |
| Background information: |
*Wellington and Beijing became ‘sister cities’ on 10 May 2006.
*Mayor Prendergast welcomed the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader to Wellington in 2002 and 2008.
*Since March 14 2008, after sustained protest in Tibet, Tibet has been closed to the outside world. Protests were large, frequent and widespread across Tibet in March and April 2008.
The death toll varies from the Chinese Government figure of 22 to the Tibetan Government in exile figure of 205.
