The Wellington Mayoral Forum has been leading the Regional Governance Review. In June 2011, the Mayoral Forum contracted Martin Jenkins & Associates to analyse the 155 submissions gathered from across the region on the PricewaterhouseCoopers report, which was released in October 2010. Wellington City Council received feedback from 11 individuals and organisations.

2012 Developments

  • In March 2012, the Government announced its 'Better Local Government' reforms which included proposals to speed up and make more likely the amalgamation of councils.
  • The councils in the Wellington region, including Wellington City Council, are now considering their own responses to the Government's proposals.
  • On 10 May 2012, Wellington City Council agreed at the Strategy and Policy Committee meeting to consult the city residents on four potential options for change regarding how our city and the Wellington region is governed in the future.

This consultation closes on Friday 29 June 2012.

The results of this consultation will be made available to the other councils in the Wellington region.

2011 Developments

  • On 17 February, 2011 - the PricewaterhouseCoopers report was discussed at a Strategy and Policy Committee meeting.The Mayor recommended to the Mayoral Forum that more work be done, focussing on areas that presented the best opportunities for improvement.
  • The Mayoral Forum agreed on a comprehensive engagement plan to make sure the public are fully engaged in the review of governance in the Wellington region. This plan was aligned with the Council's position on public engagement.
