Employment Relationships

The Council has a positive working relationship with all unions.

Learning & Development

The Council understands that continual learning is vital to its success as an organisation. It places a great deal of importance on nurturing and developing staff. Many Council staff grow within the organisation and progress through very different, challenging and enjoyable careers.

A reflection of our investment in this area is our recent reaccreditation for the international "Investors in People" standard. The Standard, covering 12 aspects of leadership and people development, is awarded only to organisations who pass all 12 components. Over 40,000 organisations worldwide have been awarded or are working towards this accreditation. Wellington City Council was initially awarded this in 2002 and was recently reaccredited. We remain the only Local Government in New Zealand to have the accreditation.

Wellness Leave

Wellness Leave is available for permanent employees who have completed six month’s service. If they fall ill, they will remain on full pay for the first three months of illness, and half pay for the next three months. Staff are helped back to work with well-managed rehabilitation programmes.

Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi)

The Council is working to build strong links and a great relationship with its mana whenua Treaty partners - Wellington Tenths Trust and Te Runanga o Toa Rangatira, and the wider Maori community.

The Council provides a range of training opportunities to help all staff develop and learn about Te Ao Maori (the Maori world). The Council also strongly supports Te Waka Awhina, the annual national hui for Maori.

Equity & Diversity

The Council aims to ensure its workforce reflects the Wellington community. It also seeks to make sure all staff have equal opportunity to participate at all levels of the organisation.

School Holiday Programmes

There are subsidised, full-time child care programmes during school holidays for Council staff.

Sports & Recreation

A number of different sporting teams operate throughout the Council at different times, according to the season and opportunity (for example, the Corporate Challenge, the Business Games). There is also a fully equipped gymnasium for Council staff.
